The A/C quit working today, so I followed the steps in the faq. It appears that the clutch engages when I supply 12v from the alternator, but somewhat unevenly. 2/3 of the clutch seem to retract when voltage is applied, and the remaining 1/3 does not. There's some liquified plastic material that appears to have been spewed from between the clutch/pulley and the body of the compressor. My conclusion is that the bearing & clutch assy are bad. I do not get 12v from the green wire that is supposed to supply power to the clutch. The dash switch is "out" and the climate control fuse on the dash is ok, the temp knob is set to 68 degrees, and the engine is running. Could the increased current from the clutch have damaged the ECC? Do I need to replace the control? I just replaced the control on my '93 940. Is the 960 as easy? How difficult is it to pull the clutch, pulley and bearing from the compressor as opposed to just swapping the compressor? Some for the faq make this sound like a relatively simple procedure. I plan to keep the car for several years so should I just bite the bullet and replace the compressor? Thanks.
