Tailgate Preservation

when I got my 240 - there was not much left of the tailgate. My "new" 940 has a very pristine tailgate for 200k miles. I have the trim off fixing a few things. Is it advisable to spray oil/grease etc inside the tailgate to prevent any rust or corrosion ? Even WD40 would leave a nice film and hopefully displace any moisture.
