Overheating?

It has been very hot in LA last few days and I have noticed that the temp. indicator is unusually high on my 85 240 Wagon>I am afraid to even try to use AC. Can anybody tell me how high is to high for that needle to go, or am I fine as long as it does not reach the red field?
