940 rear end into a 740 700

I just got an '88 740 wagon that needs a rear end. I was driving it home and the noise progressively got worse. It seems that the pinion gear went out on it. I have a '91 940 T parts car. Would this rear end work on the wagon? Would it be easier just to change out the rear differential and leave the housing in place or to just swap in the whole 940 rear end?
