siemens blower motor installation 200 1984

As lamented by many others, I am replacing my failed blower motor from my 1984 245. The job is as frustrating as expected but I now have the old motor out and proudly placed the new Siemens motor in.......only to find that the shaft lengths do not seem correct(short on passenger side and long on driver's). My question to those that have performed this is:
Is the Siemens motor a direct bolt in replacement or do the fan housing mounting points(3 of them) need to be modified (ground down) to accept the new motor.
It is possible that I have the motor in backwards but I do not think that is my problem.
Any sage advise before I modify anything would be much appreciated.
