Repairing torn rubber mats 120-130

Anybody have any experience repairing the (almost always) torn rubber mats?

I have a rear rubber mat from my 68 122S - nice shape, but has a couple tears, and I have a somewhat torn rubber mat from a 1965 trunk. The trunk mat is in poor shape with several tears.

I was thinking maybe some fiberglass wallboard mesh and some of that liquid rubber stuff, but I'm not sure it would "stick" to the old rubber...

Any thoughts. I'm not going to spring for new mats. I'd rather save what I have and repair it if possible. If not possible, I'll just use it as is.
