960 wagon - user experience needed 900 1993

I have an opportunity to move up from a DOHC 740 Ltd Estate to a 960 in line 6 cyl Estate. Does anyone have a view on how these rate regarding fuel usage, troublesome transmission etc. After 275,000 ml in a manual '87 240 wagon and 50,000 km in an auto 740 wagon we have grown used to the troublefree, ain't broke so don't fix it, 4 cyl volvo workhorse - is there a plus here especially with the price of oil going up. People getting out of big engines so there are some appealing deals around. Christopher
