Heater core and system pressure 700 1987

Hi folks,

When I leave the car off in the parking lot (or my driveway), I find that for at least 12 hours, my cooling system holds pressure.

What I'm confused about is whether a leaky heater core would affect system pressure - when the car is off, or when the heater valve is closed. I notice a coolant smell when the heater is off, so... what's up?
