Center support bearing question 200

I am in the process of replacing my driveshaft center rubber support and bearing on my 88 wagon. While knocking the old bearing off I pretty much destroyed the little aluminum round plate that goes around the foward shaft about 1/4 of an inch foward of the bearing. What is that part called, is it supposed to help keep road dirt away from the bearing, is it necessary to replace it? Thanks for your feedback.

Regards, Don
