I replaced my original M47 about 6k ago. The original one lasted to around 295K, which I think is pretty good. Supposedly, the one I got from a local yard had around 110K on it. Even through they said it came from an 89 240, the bellhousing (w/o cutout for crank position sensor), and shift linkage support bracket were different and I had to swap the originals from my car. I replaced the clutch when I changed the transmission.
From the start the transmission seemed to have problems. The first problem was stiff 1st & 2nd gears, and slight clash when downshifting, especially if the brakes were applied at the same time. Occasionally when cold the gears would grind. I have changed the fluid out three times using the synthetic ATF recommended on other posts without any improvements. About 1k miles ago, a grinding almost screech noise has been coming from the transmission. The noise is audiable in neutral and gets worse under load. Sitting a stop, the noise goes away with clutch disengaged. For some reason 4th gear is almost completely quite though. The fluid has been metalic flakey every time I have changed it. Obviously there is something very wrong with the transmission, just curious if this is a main bearing and why 4th gear would be quite. What could have made this happen, especially at 110K (if true milage)? One thing I found odd when reassembling everthing in the car was the clutch cable I got from FCP, it was almost too short, and in order to fit it I had to take out every bit of adjustment. The clutch however did not seem loaded with pedal released. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Anyone have a used reliable M47 for sale? Thank you.
