Sudden near-dead idling when warm; strong gas smell; recover after 10 min cooling 200 1991

It happened a couple times recently here at Honolulu Hawaii. Temperature was about 88 degree and both times, I was waiting in line for gas and getting into a shopping mall. My 1991 240SE station wagon suddenly slowdown and choke. I restart and keep the gas paddle down, It would run in a very slow speed for a few seconds and and died. I could smell a strong gas air from the exhaust. I had to pull over and waited a while (not long about 10 minutes) and it goes again.

The car is running fine on the freeway and I can feel that the car just don't like to idle too long! Anyone have similar experiences?

Thanks!
