Maf sensor cleaning 700 1986

Hi,
I have been chassing a fuel consumtion problem on my '86 740ti wagon for about two years now. I have changed the air filter, fuel filter, cat converter (and entire exhaust system at the same time), oxygen sensor, computers water temp sensor, injectors, all vacum lines and fuel pressure regulator all to make very little change on my fuel economy. I checked that the MAF sensor is working by both doing the unplug it and see if there's a differance test and by back probing the connector and checking the voltages the way it says to do in "the volvo problem solver" everything seems right but I still have poor gas millage (11/13 mpg city) and less power than I used to have. Today I decited to try cleaning the Maf sensor to see if it would make a differance, it did but I knoticed that there was a little piece of crud that remained on the wire even with my best efforts to remove it using my cleaning spray. What I wanted to know is whether or not that little piece of crud whould make much of a differance to the reading the maf sensor gives or not. If it does make a big differance whould it be a good idea to try and adjust tha maf sensor to compensate for the false reading using the adjustment screw (under the sealed cap on the side of the sensor)?
