Fuel gauge changed 700

Had a new fuel tank pump installed in my 92 740, Regina system. Previously the gauge was reading near perfect. 5L fuel lefy after the warning light, at zero reading. Now it reads zero and I can only get 32L fuel in (tank full is 55L)
What could the mechanic have done to cause this?
