To Jack or not to Jack for Motor Mounts...:) 200 1990

Hi all,
90 240wagon 183k
I'm trying to replace the passenger side motor mount, its not sheared but its gettin pretty ugly in there.
After reading the several diatribes and discussions thereafter on the board and having used the jack up the engine method before i decided to do it the "right" way and just support the engine. So i got off all the nuts and am working on the dreaded front bolt under the alternator. Well i had read that this was made easier by dropping the sway bar a little..nice idea except the bolts on the driver side have decided to shrink to somewhere between 13mm and 14mm, gotta love cleveland winters right.. SO.. I'm wondering if i loosen the mount nuts on the driver side, not the brackets, thus giving me some working room to jack the engine up.. do-able? anybody done this easily before.. i am using just wood/w a hole on the oil pan.. anywhere else better to jack? I really wanted to do this a more correct way but am getting pretty frustrated with it.. I know we've all talked about this before but a little reassurance would help
thanks
cp
