Electrical fault in tail light circuit somewhere? 200 1989

My right rear tail light won't light up when I step on the brake pedal. The bulb failure warning light, as it should, does go on. When I put on the headlights, the dim tail light filaments seem to work but only the left rear lights up fully when you press the brake pedal.

Yesterday, I tried to replace both bulbs, but that did not work. While the car was in idle and with the brake pedal depreassed, I unscrewed the bulb and the housing from its place in the right rear, and put it back in. The light came on for a couple of seconds, then went out again.

I did it again, then BOTH braked lights went off. And not only did they remain off, the bulb failure warning light did NOT go on. After turning the car off and waiting around 20 minutes, the right rear tail light does not light up, but the left one does.

It's frustrating; I have replaced the bulb housing, even replaced a circuit board and a couple of fuses. Nothing seems to work.

Thoughts?
