Worst improvements or expensive lessons? 200

Putting the difficulty of reading the original post aside and also any assumptions as to he/she's nationality or other potential root of misspelling, 86Volvo240 was onto something good and I thought it should receive proper due.

I read posts where a 240 owner attempts to fix something, or upgrade something and it just doesn't work out. There is much to be gathered from what often turns out to be a mistake, or results in a few lesson's we learn on the way. This adds to our cumulative knowledge and only makes the BB stronger resource and the posts more meaningful.

I often wonder, for instance:

While Jorrell was fully rebuilding his now sweet 245 what were some of the most grand upgrades or plans he had that turned into major headache's or he just scrapped because he felt it wasn't worth it?
Art Benstein has a wealth of knowledge from what seems years of wrenching, and I wonder some of the things he's tried along the way that he never would again!

Now for a couple of mine:

I installed IPD overload coils, hoping to raise the rear end (it did) and stiffen the ride (oh, boy, did it ever) but I primarily drive around the city and the rear end would jump over potholes and rough features. It was awful and too harsh for me. If I was in construction, say keeping the cargo area loaded up with my hand tools all the time and 300-400 extra pounds all the time, they would be a perfect upgrade. The day I loaded 8 bags of soil in the back, the coils were awesome. If I drove nothing but hwy miles, they'd be awesome.
I learned I don't drive my car in enough of the conditions where I would benefit from this upgrade. For me, it wasn't worth it. I'll put them back on if I ever load it up for big road trip.

And most recently I installed a new o2 sensor because I figured it was time for a new one. Well, its cut my MPG in HALF! So this is turning out to be a very expensive lesson. I now need to diagnose if the new one even works, or if I have other problems. Worst of all, like a jackass, I through my old sensor away...
