Had good AC up until a month ago. No records from PO (231K miles) but the tag on the reciever/dryer indicates an R 134 conversion. First check found compressor not engaging the clutch. I jumped the low pressure switch and got it turning but no cooling. Thinking that indicated low charge I hooked up my AC gages but could only find a low pressure tap. Slowly adding one can of R 134 got the compressor running for short bursts and then continuously. However little or no cooling from the cabin vents. I didn't find a high pressure tap other than right on the compressor so didn't check that side. After shutting down I noticed two things. 1. The low pressure quick release fitting on the silver reciever dryer was leaking slowly after removing the gage hose. 2. There was a lot of leaking or at least gas moving around sounds down at the compressor.
Question: Does that sound indicate bad seals in the compressor or a dead compressor?
I will look into getting a new fitting to solve the other leak.
Next step (after vacation) get high and low pressure readings to see if the compressor is realling compressing.
I have the vacuum pump and other stuff left over from converting the 1991 240 last summer.
