I have a 90 740 sedan, 267,000, and a 91 wagon, 165,000. This is mostly about the sedan.
Since I got it in 2001, 75,000 mi ago, it has had stiff-ish steering. I've changed the fluid a couple of times which has made a small difference, and changed the ball joints, but it has never approached the light feel and responsiveness of my other car, or other cars I've driven. I've read various threads and topics over the years looking for a definitive answer, and had opinions from some mechs who have driven it. There is no play and it moves from side to side with no differences. I've considered the top of the strut bearings, and may do that soon with some new inserts, but I've found a 90 760 at the 'store', pick-n-pull, that is in simply incredible shape. I don't know why it's there, must be a motor or trans as everything else is outstanding. Great interior btw, tan.
The rack. The FAQ says that there's a number on the service plate near the right headlight that says what model rack it is. I've looked at more than 20 cars, and most do not have a number in that particular block. My 90 does not, and this car does not. My other car does but that isn't helpful here. Also, both my cars do not have a service plate on or anywhere near the drivers door, nor any other door.
So I'm trying to figure how to tell if the rack will fit, or if I get the pump and lines also that it doesn't matter, that then all will fit.
The rack in the 760 seems to be outstanding, judging from external evidence. No sign of leak, crud, or anything, and actually looks to have been possibly a recent install as it's so clean, right out to the tie rod ends. Good boots, and all seems tight. The tie rods seem to be the same diameter as mine with small boot holes, but there seem to be slight differences of how the lines are bent near where they attach to the rack. Also the cap over the input shaft coming from the steering wheel, on the bottom of the rack ; this one is slightly convex and the one in my car seems flat. otherwise they seem to be very similar.
thanks for any comments
