Rapid battery drain 95 940 900 1995

Need help with electrical problem, 1995 940 wagon,180K miles, exc condition otherwise. NEVER before failed to start, never stalled. April 08, car failed to start, suspected 3 yo battery slowly drained while car sat, would not take charge, replaced batt with new. Next day, took 2 hour trip with new batt, car would not start, battery at 7.8 volts? Got 2nd new battery, same problem. Had 100A Nippon Dinso alternator rebuilt= new brgs, brushes, regulator. Took 1 hour trip, batt voltage down to 8.2 volts? Recharged, back to 12.3 volts.

While idling, alternator output is 13.6 volts, so alternator is performing correctly, and trying to charge battery. Seems alternator is being overworked, while battery is drained due to major short to ground.

Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.
