744t power antenna mast 700 1991

so can i take the power antenna mast off of a 740 donor car w/ no battery (ie. one at u-pull it) w/out destroying it?

based on what i've read about the nylon thread and the teeth and all that i wonder if the system releases when the car is off or if i get the nut off and try and pull the mast out i'm going to just break the mast....

would it be easier to take the whole assembly out and take the mast out and then just deal with mine since it has power?

anyone done this?
