Is there a trick to remove the brake/clutch pedal shaft? 444-544

The repair book says to "drive out the pedal shaft outwards and remove the pedals". Sounds like it's just soft pressed in.

I had no trouble removing the pedals after removing the circlips, but pedal shaft is in there pretty good. I don't want to ruin it if there is a better way than just pounding on it.
