engine control unit [ecu] life span? 700 1990

I have a 1990 740 turbo wagon with 211,000 miles with the usual high mileage problems however, this time I have a huge one. The car is in a volvo service station due to poor exceleration and fuel related symptoms and the diagnosis is to replace the ecu unit. Do these units fail at about this mileage?
