I bought a 65 Volvo. It had no key, and with the armored ignition cable I couldn't hot wire it. It was in good shape and the odometer showed just under 40,000 miles. Just from looking the car over real well it seemed like the number might actually be right. Anyway I bought the thing and trailered it home. I had a key made and when I turned it over it started right away. Then the most high pitched, really loud, squeal began. I shut it off, rechecked the oil, and started it again, again the squeal and I shut it off. I finally pulled the engine (with a lot of help and advice from the forum members, THANKS!) fearing it was one of the engine bearings. Lo and behold it turned out (I think) to be the distributor shaft. I pulled the distributor and the end (the part that goes into the oil pump) was sheared off. The oil pump shaft slot (where the distributor shaft fits in is now “Y” shaped. The shaft, where it goes through the block, won’t fit anymore. I tried to put it back in just to see if it would fit but either the shaft is too large or the bushing it goes into is too small. BTW the oil pump doesn’t turn which is what caused the problem I’m guessing. So my questions are:
1. Has this ever happened to any of you wit B18s and 2. does anybody know where I can get a new bushing, and what it’s called, or a part number? 3. A good source (least expensive) for a new distributor gear shaft?
Thanks for any help you can give,
