Remove Side Mirror without breaking inside trim 200 1986

I am trying to remove the inside manual adjust Side View mirrors from my wrecked 1986 245 so that I can bestow them on others.
I have removed the inside door panels which allows complete 360 degree access to the triangular black plastic inside mirror trim/cover. My recollection is that the plastic is held on with a "ball and socket" kind of retainer(s). I have not ever successfully removed (even at the pick-a-part) the triangular plastic trim pieces without breaking them. I have attempted to pry the plastic trim away from the door with no success. I fear that more force will only result in a broken trim piece.

My search of the archives has not helped -- no clear description of exactly what to do.

Can someone please help me figure out the magic trick to removing this trim?

I know it must be removed in order to reach the screws which hold the outer mirror in place. I really don't want to break it and I have applied considerable force already.

The hulk is being towed away tomorrow AM, so a speedy reply is appreciated.
