New water pump leaking around upper seal - new seals? 200 1986

Have to re-do water pump I just put in. Do I have to get new seals? What is the best way to hold pressure up while tightening. I'm thinking to get another person (my son) to use pry bar up while I tighten, hopefully it is safe to put pressure by prying on the adjuster for alternator below the pump?
