Is the thing that's leaking in my A/C a drier? 700

I've been trying to get the (previously switched to r134a operation) A/C back online in my '90 745 (turbo). It swallows a can of r134, and then runs out of pressure. It swallowed a can with red dye in it, and I didn't see the dye come out.

BUT, I did find this: the thingy screwed onto the side of the thingy in between the compressor and the condensor--it's mounted behind the bumper on the pssgr side, easily accessible from under-car--hisses when the compressor's on. (I have to jump the compressor solenoid to get it to turn on.) The thingy-on-the-thingy is obviously corroded through on the top.

So, can I just screw it off and replace it? Or: What the heck is it?
