The tailgate lock cylinder on my 1992 740 wagon is badly corroded and I can't even get the key in it. According to the previous owner's receipts, he had it unseized and lubricated a couple of years ago, but I bet the little flap inside the keyhole went missing, so it filled up with salt and corroded again. I tried poking and digging with sharp instruments, even pouring vinegar in it to soak, then blowing it out and flushing with WD40, but to no avail; the key only wants to go in 1/3 of the way and wants to bend, so I think it's toast.
What I'd like to do is get a new lock cylinder, preferably one that works with my key, but the original key code tag is long gone. Can a lock cylinder matching the key be obtained and where? I suppose a locksmith could come up with something, but I'm thinking that would be a high-dollar project. Could Volvo come up with a cylinder if I provide the VIN (assuming the locks are still original)?
