No start after refilling dry gas tank 200 1987

My teenage son ran out of gas Friday nite in the '87 240 DL. He added 3 gallons to the tank and tried to restart the car several times without success. When I took him back to the car Saturday morning, the car started on the first try. Any ideas what prevented the restart? Anything I need to check before allowing regular use again (not counting my sanity)? Thanks, Barry.
