It seems that the new fuel pump relay I just got from FCP and installed in my car is a solid-state type. Instead of the big frame and two sets of coils and contacts the old one had inside, it only had a circuit board with a diode and a little box. It did not look like I could get the box open without destroying anything, so don't know if there is truely a pair of solid state relays inside.
However, if the newer replacement fuel pump relays are solid state, it would eliminate the problem of the contacts pitting and generally getting gunked up with wear and age. And, there still are the big leads inside that run from the contact pins (that plug into the relay box in the car) to the circuit board. So, you can still solder up an emergency relay override switch in case the ECU fuel pump circuit fails.
