Oil leak; intake manifold leak 200 1989

This is partly a report; partly to see if I'm missing something.

A friend bought an 89 245 yesterday. PO (the gent from whom he bought it) had purchased it with "oil leak from somewhere in the back of the engine", drove it home, decided he didn't want to fix it,let it sit 6 months. That's all he knew about it. Car started & ran OK but idled up and slowly down to a stall (possible intake leak).

I said I'd help fix it. We power-washed motor, got underneath with it running, saw no oil leak - no obvious drips. Motor greasy though - looked like years of slow leaks.

When cleaned up I saw a paste (something like bondo) covering the rear of the valve cover and intake manifold around cylinder 4. Pulled flame trap, hose clogged, much crud. Chiseled off bondo & pulled intake manifold - partly to inspect, partly to get to the oil separator.

Manifold gasket on # 4 (rearmost) was broken at the bottom - pushed out - and had been bad some time.

I think there are 2 unrelated problems: 1) Intake was leaking and person 2 owners ago tried to fix w/ bondo (or whatever it is) except the leak was on bottom; and 2) the oil separator box & clogged hoses were pressurizing the engine.

I think there's no relation between intake leak and oil leak. Agree or no?

Anything else I should service/ replace while I have it apart?
