I know this list is a bit "biased" (so am I!) but I'll ask nevertheless.
I'm thinking of replacing my 92 245 wagon after this winter (getting up there mileage wise - though at 344,000 kms, some would say it's got a long way to go, rust is starting to creep in underneath and here and there after 16 Canadian winters, and I'd rather not spend too much more money on it). So I am casually on the lookout for something else, in case a good deal comes along this Fall.
I was initially thinking of getting a 5-7 year old Toyota (Camry, Avalon?), or Honda CRV, something reliable, fuel efficient, roomy and comfortable, safe, user-repairable, etc. I want to stay away from cars that have the "black box" feel, becoming too dependent on dealers and shops. Money is not a major constraint, but if I can save money on a used car, and spend the extra cash on trips and other pleasurable things, why not? I should add that I have a couple of teenagers learning to drive, and that this replacement used car would be occasionally used by them, which is one reason I want to get something not too expensive, and safe!
Now I'm thinking that maybe I'm onto a good thing: I've gotten to know and understand my 245, have acquired all the service manuals and know-how in doing some repairs, have a bunch of spare parts from a parts car, so maybe I should stick with this line? THere's also the 740 and 940 line that have been recommended to me, but I'm a bit partial to the 240 (simpler, more basic?). Bottom line is that very nice specimens of all of these seem to be available for not too much money, if one takes the time to look and is patient.
So my questions are:
1. Is there any reason you can think of why I SHOULDN'T consider a 240 (740,940) series Volvo for my replacement car?
2. WHat is the point when one should consider upgrading one's 40 series Volvo to another one with less mileage, less rust, etc.? (keeping in mind that often, "the devil you know is better than the one you don't")
Look forward to your insightful thoughts, as usual! Thanks!
