Is the air filter box thermostat realy necessary? 900

Volvo has an air filter box thermostat that opens or closes a flap door to fresh air in all the cars I own. At one time the failure of this thermostat caused the overheat of the powerstages in the 960 and one failed. I also notice that the air intake on the side to the exhaust is smaller than the fresh air side. This makes no sense to me. What are the benefits of the hot air? Is the system realy necessary? What are the cons to having fresh air only?
