Noise under heavy accelleration 200

This questions is concerning my 1988 245dl automatic 104k..
Tuesday evening while coming home, I decided to exercise my over overdrive cutout button. I switched the overdrive in and out 4 times in 2 miles or so. It maybe unrelated??
The next morning, 25 degrees coldest day so far of fall, I went to warm up the car and upon starting the car a sound that was like playing cards in the bicycle spokes cames from the engine. I imediately shut it down, waited a few seconds and restarted it with no noise. I thought it was over... Now when I am in a 7/10 or higher position on the gas pedal, a fainter version of the sound appears to be coming from the front passengers side of the engine compartment, but I cannot be for certain where it is coming from since it only occuries while the car is traveling at speeds above 30mph. I drove it on the interstate at sppeds up to 85 mph and it will still give the same sound when you press the gas pedal down. The tramission is functioning perfectly and I can redline the engine in park without being able to replicate the noise.
I had my mechnic drive it around the block. We put it on the lift and he thinks it is coming from the doughnut bushing at the half shaft. It looked fine to me. I recently had the rear transmission mount replaced.
I though it was maybe the alternator? I sprayed WD40 at the bearing with no change. Any suggestions? Thank You in advance for your help!!!!
