All rear window defoggers I have ever known operated on a timer (~10 minutes) and de-enrgized if the ignition was turned off before they timed out. Presumably the car would usually be warmed up enough after 10 minutes not to need the defogger anymore. The one in my '92 740 Wagon stays on all the time the toggle switch is on. Is that the way Volvos are supposed to be?
