Why would an OEM AMM fail in less than a year? 200

My trusty local Volvo dealership mechanic installed a new OEM air mass meter in my 1990 n/a 240 less than a year ago, and last week it stopped working, shorted out.

Or at least this is his explanation for why my car wouldn't start last week.

Luckily the AMM is under warranty, so I don't have to pay for the new one.

What would it fail so soon? Installation problem? Damage somehow? or maybe just poorly manufactured AMM?
