5spd trans question 200

From time to time the gear shift lever will spontaneously drop about a half inch and then vibrate and jump around. You can still shift gears but the the position that they engage is way off. I usually double clutch a few times and attempt to re shift and lift the lever gently. Eventually it remedies it self and will be begin to shift normally. Is this the sighn off big trans problems or is there a repair that can be made. Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.( the car is a 89 245)
