skidplate or not? Heavy Duty or not? 700

So, I got a financial aid check, finally, and I'm able to get a few things I've been meaning to get. I'm looking at getting a skid plate, mostly in the interest of protecting things from splashing water and hoping it'll help with mileage a tiny bit. No, I'm not expecting to get more than maybe 1 mpg out of it.
Does it cover the whole underside from the front airdam to the back of the engine bay?
How does the light vs. heavy duty hold up?
How does it attach, and is it reinforceable with washers or anything to avoid tearing up the plastic?
Do you have to pull the whole thing off to do an oil change?
I'm ordering them through FCP groton along with new heater hoses and trunk struts.

If anyone else has any other ideas about it, please let me know. I'd like to set up this order soon, but it won't get processed till monday anyway.
Thanks,
Will
