OIL - Straight 30 W or 10 - 30 W ?? 700 1988

1988 740 wagon non turbo. I am going to do my every 3000 mile oil & filter(Mann)change this week and am curious about oil weight. I have always used multi viscosity 10 - 30 weight oil. Dino not synthetic. An old timer said that instead I should just use straight 30 weight in Winter and 40 weight in Summer. Any one here do that ? Would be curious as to what weight oil others use(not type - but what weight). Do let me know. Thanks.
