Wagon Tailgate panel repair questions beyond info in FAQs 700

Forum;

I have the typical problem which befalls every wagon owner (tailgate inside panel which needs improved and permanent fastening)...even though I have always been gentle with the tailgate and have never really slammed it...this really is a p***weak design, but I guess that's no secret at this point...

Long ago I replaced the four lower fasteners with "wellnuts", custom washers I made up, and real screws(!)...this worked very well to keep the LOWER EDGE effectively held to the tailgate... I intend to reuse this technique and hardware again, but the UPPER EDGE now needs to be refastened (I had to remove the entire panel to get to and lube the lockworks after external latch was no longer effective). Now that I see the way less-than-impressive (plasdick!) "slide in from above" strategy of the upper edge, I need a (much) better solution... I've read the FAQs but am still unclear on the way the awailable kits do this...can someone post a pic or a bit of a better description of these and the way they work...I was thinking of making a metal eqivalent...any thoughts and experience is much appreciated.

Cheers form New England!
