broken oil dipstick tube - how to remove? 700 1990

The mount on the dipstick tube must have been removed by a p.o. It appears that the tube broke off just above where it enters the oil pan. Now I have about 1/4" of tube sticking out of the oil pan. Before I gum things up, how does the tube come out of the oil pan? My first thought is to get pliers in there and pull the piece out? Any wisdom is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Chad
