1990 760 Intermittent fuel gauge 700 1990

I bought this 760 back in March of this year. It's in nice shape with 224k on the clock. The previous owner mentioned to me that the fuel gauge was intermittent and suspected it was a wiring connection somewhere. Since I bought it, the fuel gauge had never worked until just recently. Now, on cold mornings when I first start the car, the gauge will work more often than not. But it works for perhaps 10 or 15 minutes before it goes on the blink again. I can tell when it will work because when I first turn the key and all the dash lights illuminate, the low-fuel light will also go on (and then go off once the engine starts). This light does not illuminate if the gauge doesn't feel like working.

I've already checked the wiring at the tank where it connects to the sender unit. No corrosion and the wires appear sound.

Getting to a 740-style gauge panel is easy, but I've never figured out how to pull the gauge panel out of an '88+ 760. I'm figuring I might need to do this to check the wiring behind the dash. Any advice on how to get the panel out? Also, any other likely areas that I should look at where I might find the problem?

Thanks in advance.

Best,

Michael
