One Volvo and One non volvo question 900 1994

Hi all,
1994 940 turbo: Most of the time, when starting from a stop/ stoplight, it seems that engine is going to die but it never died. It feels that it is going to shut down. Please give me some hint to resolve it.
1999 Mercury Villager: I have changed timing belts on my two volvo 940s with the help of counter hold tool. But for this van I do not have courage to take this job. There is no room like volvos and to remove the crank pulley seems to be very hard without the proper tool to hold it. I was wondering if the rope trick mentioned here will work for this engine or I should not mess with it at all. Please give me advice.
Thanks
Ram
