My car has recently started doing this: when cruising at 70-75 mph
with engine under load (going up a long hill) the car suddenly starts
shaking. First time I thought they roughened the pavement for some
reason (bumps in the road), but the road was smooth. The shaking is
very pronounced, seems like something is coming loose. It goes away
if I slow down to below 70 mph (didn't try to accelerate above 75 :-)
Doesn't seem to happen on a level surface or when going downhill,
so I don't think it's the wheel balance. The car is a '98 V90 wagon,
with 121k on the clock and with (I believe) all original suspension
components. I was planning to have the front shocks replaced even before
the shaking started happening, on advice of my mechanic (they look
worn). Anything in particular to look for? It's hard to get under
the hood and take a look while cruising on a highway...
I'm still relatively new to this car (have driven it for a couple of
months only and just fixed a few things, one by one).
Thanks!
Vlad
