Replacing a 740 in tank fuel pump 700

Hi I'm new to this site and have a question about replacing the in tank fuel pump on a 1990 740 turbo wagon. Does the fuel tank need to be dropped in order to gain access to the pump or is there a way to access the pump without dropping the tank. I ask because I would like to buy a local 740 turbo but it is not running and the owner says the fuel pump is shot. Thanks in advance
