240 water pump and RTV 200

It's time to do the timing belt and water pump on my wife's '93 240 w/140k miles. I've never done either but have a couple of weeks over the Christmas break to give them both a try. I have a question regarding the use of RTV with the water pump. I have a neighbor who owns a number of 240's (including a '84 that he bought new) and has always done his own maintenance. He swears by RTV Blue. I've watched him do the water pump and he soaks both sides of the gasket with it. Is the general consensus to use so much RTV?

Also, is RTV Blue used on the o-ring connecting to the head?

I suspect I'll have more questions once get started...
