Back up lights inop 900 1996

My 96 Volvo 960 backup lights are inop. Checked fuses, bulbs and wiring to the lights. Any thoughts on the next step. Have a '90 5series BMW that experienced the same problem which needed a backup light switch on the trans. No such part listed for the Volvo. Appreciate any and all suggestions.
