240 Timing belt installation problem 200

Hi all,

I am in the process of replacing the seals on my '87 240. After getting the seals in and new timing belt on I seem to have a problem. When I rotate the crankshaft, the timing belt seems to ride too far forward on the cam and intermediate shaft sprockets. It rides about 2 or 3 mm forward and off the sprockets, with the remainder of the belt on and engaged. The timing alignment seems to be ok. The crankshaft sprocket has the guide plates installed correctly I believe. I also replaced the tensioner.

The old belt did not do this and rode entirely on the sprockets. Should I button it up and fire the engine up?
