How do you remove the needle from the speedometer without ruining anything ?

The Speedo works, the odometer does not. The little white gear is busted. It looks like the speedometer needle has to come off so I can get the face off and remove the screws that hold the unit together. Not wanting to make matters worse, I thought I'd ask...
