Does anyone think the age/ condition of a 240 timing belt can be judged via inspection?
Age cracks and pliability are good indicators but don't tell the whole story.
This comes up fairly often eg. someone I know has purchased a car with scant service history and is: considering a trip; or sending a child off to college; planning to use it daily on a long commute; whatever. Their question to me is always "What parts should we replace beforehand?"
And of course I wonder about it for my own cars.
IMO it's not reasonable to replace the timing belt just because you don't know how old/ used it is.
