Can you help identify this coolant contaminant?? (images) 1994

1994 944T 180K

This car came to me with almost no history. We just got back from a 1700 mile trip in the car. It included changing out a new (less than 2500 miles) Hepu pump while on the road. I don’t believe that the defective Hepu has anything to do with this problem. There was evidence of it prior to that problem.

Even after the obvious pump seal leak was stopped I continue to smell coolant when I lift the hood. I can not find the source of the continuing leak (yet). In about 800 miles of driving the level dropped about 8 ozs.

You can see that the grease like material collects around the top of the reservoir. The second image shows how it floats on the top of the coolant.

It is very “grease like”. I have no idea of the source.

Has anyone seen anything similar to this before?

Thanks for any enlightenment.
